Could Asante Samuel be getting ready to join Champ Bailey in Denver? It's more than a slight possibility. Reports out of Denver are the team is going to make a strong play for Samuel as soon as free agency starts. Samuel and Bailey tied for the NFL lead in interceptions this season, each recording 10 picks. The tandem would obviously give Denver the best set of corners in the NFL and help the Broncos offset the loss of Darrent Williams who died tragically last month.
Reports out of New England are that Samuel and the Patriots are miles apart in contract negotiations. Someone close to Samuel called the Patriots first offer "laughable." New England could still put the franchise tag on Samuel but he's already stated if that happens, he won't be happy. This could be Deion Branch all over again in New England. Of course, with over $20 million to spend in free agency this offseason, the Patriots could try something crazy like actually paying one of their players but I wouldn't hold your breath. Look for Denver and the Jets to both go after Samuel hard and for him to get a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $15 million. In other words, goodbye New England.
